Local councillor says people of Ballymun feel let down and plan to protest over lack of stores in the area
Councillor Noeleen Reilly has highlighted that people feel let down and that Ballymun has had a negative look since Supervalu announced its closure, but there’s no point in protesting at Dublin City Council.
Ballymun residents are protesting outside the DCC office on November 17 to demand a shopping centre in the area as “many locals are travelling out of the area for basic needs” and there is a “stark need” for retail shops in the area.
But Cllr Reilly, who represents the Ballymun-Finglas region, has said that she understands the frustration from the public but “DCC don’t build shopping centres.”
“I know people are going to protest at the Council also, but the Council doesn't build shopping centres, what they can do is create the environment where a shopping centre could survive in the area.
“You could protest at Dublin City Council offices all day, every day for the next 10 years. It is not going to get a shopping centre.
“What you need is private investment for that, then you need to create the environment where private investment is going to succeed.
“I can totally understand why people feel let down. Supervalu is losing money, the main grocery store in the area. Businesses won't open unless they're making money.
