Louth residents fear street could become protest flashpoint over Ukrainian refugee accommodation
Residents in a quiet street in Dundalk fear it could become a flashpoint for protests if plans to house Ukrainian refugees in a former office building go ahead.
With protests and arson attacks on a number of buildings earmarked for providing accommodation for refugees taking place around the country, residents of Brook Street are worried that similar scenes could play out there.
Refurbishment work at former offices at Brook Building, Ardee Road, has been completed and the building is set to be used as emergency accommodation for Ukrainian refugees.
Residents say they have received no communication about the number of refugees who will be accommodated there or when they will arrive.
"We’re afraid that if they are going to put refugees here that it will bring protesters,” said one woman who has lived in the street all her life.
“It’s a very quiet area, the neighbours watch out for each other,” she said. “There’s a lot of elderly and a few families.”
